Brigham and Beckham

Our twins have arrived! A lot earlier than expected, but they are here and they are healthy!

I had two doctor appointments today. My first one was with the neonatologist at 10:30 am. They did an ultrasound and said things look great. They usually check my cervix, but decided not to saying that for sure I was fine. I told them I had been having some contractions, but they assured me that was normal and I was fine. Corinne came with me to my appointment, so when it was over we ran errands in Salt Lake and went to Chile's for lunch. I kept having contractions. By the time I got to my doctor appointment at 2:15, he checked me and I was already at a 5! I was shocked. I knew I was having contractions, but they weren't regular or really strong yet. He sent me over to Labor and Delivery. It took them over an hour to get me started and hooked up to an IV to try and stop the contractions. They kept getting worse. I knew the babies were coming soon. They wouldn't give me anything for pain, because they were certain they could stop the contractions. My doctor came in and checked me again and didn't even finish checking me because he said it would just make it worse and they were ready to come. I felt like I needed to push, so I'm pretty sure I was at a 9 or 10. Still with no epidural...it was great! They started getting me ready for a c-section. Baby A was head down, but Baby B was transverse. Plus, Jackson was a c-section so it was too dangerous to try a V-bac with twins (plus it is against most hospital's policies). Because of my heart condition, I cannot have a spinal tap. They gave me the epidural, but of course with my luck that wasn't working like it should. I could still feel my legs, my contractions, them poking me, etc... So after an hour of trying to get the epidural to work, they decided to just put me under general anesthesia and get the babies out. By then they had given me a little bit of morphine to help the pain, and it isn't good for the babies to get that for very long. Next thing I knew I was awake and they said everything went great and the babies were fine. They were both over 4 pounds which was very surprising for being born at 33 weeks, plus with how small Kallie and Jackson were at 38 weeks (5 lbs 7 oz and 5 lbs 13 oz).

Later that night after everyone left, Josh told me more details which made me grateful I was asleep for the delivery. Brigham had a hard time breathing on his own at first and Josh watched his chest basically stop moving. He thought for sure his heart had stopped. They kept trying to get him going, but couldn't. They called a code blue to the ER, which scared everyone waiting for me in the waiting room thinking it was for me. A chaplain came to talk to Josh, so he thought for sure Brigham was dead and was trying to figure out how he was going to tell me. It was a very scary experience for Josh, and I'm so grateful that everything turned out okay.

I was too out of it to move or to even attempt to see the babies, so Josh took a lot of pictures to show me.  They are so cute and so precious. I can't believe I have two babies! I don't know what I did to deserve all these blessings, but I am so grateful for today and that these two angels arrived safely!
